FISH DIVERSITY IN NIRA RIVER

The indian subcontinent has a large number of rivers like godavari, Krishna, Cauvery, Bhima etc. These principle rivers including their main tributaries have a total lenth about 27359km. These along with the canlas and irrigation channels having a length of 112654km. form a network throughout the country add coinsiderly to the contreys capture fisheries resiurces .this area offers a wide verity of suitable habitats of fishes. There are severel hundreds of species in the above maintained areas.

    Fishesh constitute almost half the total number of the 390000 vertibrates species recognised the world over 21723 are living species of fish of which 8411 are freshwater and 11650 marine 'species. In the indian relegion alone of the 2500 specis, 930 are freshwater inhabitats and 1570 are marine. In term of habitat diversity, fish lives in almost every conceivable aaquatic habitats. It is roughly estimated that india alone harbours 120000 known and perharps another 400000 as yet undescribed species of fauna and flora distrubuted over the country 320 million hectares of land. Considerable studies on fish diversity in diffrent freshwater bodies of india have been caried out during the last few decades.
